Rowe EDU - ADCP Applications Summary

General Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) are hydro-acoustic instruments that are used to measure water velocities or currents over a specific range of water depth. ADCPs utilizes the Doppler effect to measure water velocity in discrete layers – essentially sending a sound signal of a specific frequency into the water column and measuring the sound signal return. The change in return frequency is proportional to the water velocity. ADCPs can be deployed in many ways, up-looking, down-looking, and side-looking.

Rowe EDU - What is a DVL

Background Doppler Velocity Logs (DVLs) have been an industry standard for underwater navigation for a number of year now. Whether the vehicle is a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) or manned vehicles such as submarines, DVLs are used to determine underwater position to navigate. Work-class ROVs have become a mainstay in the Oil and Gas market allowing for work such as opening and closing valves and conducting surveys to be done deep below the sea surface.

Rowe Technologies Long Range Mode

Rowe Technologies Inc. Long Range Mode Some may have noticed Teledyne RD Instruments new optional feature XRT (Extended Range Tracking) in there DVL. Well I have great news for all current and future Rowe Technologies ADCP and DVL owners, this feature has been included with all our ADCPs and DVLs from the beginning and it has always been FREE. We have called this mode, Long Range (LR) mode. Narrowband (Long Range Mode) Their new XRT feature uses Narrowband processing.

Kearfott High Grade INS Integration

Integration Integeration with Kearfott’s High Grade INS has completed with success. The overall distance travelled accuracy was below 0.1% using our Rowe Tech Dual Frequency 600khz/1200khz ADCP/DVL and Kearfott’s High Grade INS. More details on how to configure the ADCP for the Kearfott system can be here: http://rowetechinc.co/wiki/index.php?title=Kearfott_INS_Setup Testing Testing was done in Mission Bay in very shallow water, about 2m-3m deep. This would ensure there would be drop outs from our ADCP when the depths got to shallow.

Rowe Technologies Inc. Sponsors San Diego City College Robosub Team

2018 Rowe Technologies Inc, being a smaller company decided to sponsor a smaller school. I had been apart of the Robosub program when I went to San Diego City College. This is a community college, the budget is smaller. Also the students are not as far along in acdemic knowledge, so its a new learning experience. But the expectation is these students will not be at this college long term, so new students join the program more often.

Kearfott INS Integration

Integration Today we work with Kearfott to integrate our DVL with a Kearfott INS. They came to our location and we worked out all the commands they expect to send to the DVL to configure the ADCP. With the command ENGWHN 1 our DVL will output a carrot > and will accept the same commands as a Navigator. This allowed the integration to go quickly and smoothly. We then ran into one problem.

Rowe Technologies Inc. SeaPilot DVL delivered to Saab Seaeye

Saab Seaeye have announced the sale of one of their Leopard ROV systems to a University client. Integrated onto this highly capable Leopard ROV, is a Rowe Technologies SeaPilot Dopper Velocity Log (DVL) supplied by RS Aqua. The Leopard platform will provide a key resource for the recently opened deep-sea research centre at the university. No equivalent vehicle exists within the region; meaning this purchase will provide the University with some unique operational capabilities.
